The two doors enigma

Sarah, after having realized that the labyrinth is constantly changing, finds herself in front of two gates protected by four guards: grouped in pairs, one upside down, holding a shield that hides the trunk of their bodies.
Sarah: Oh no! Someone has been changing my marks. What a horrible place! It’s not fair!
Bottom Red Guard: That’s right, it’s not fair! (Laughing with the other guards) But that’s only half of it.
Sarah meets the guards
Sarah: This was a dead end a minute ago.
Bottom Blue Guard: No, that’s the dead end behind you. (Laughing with the other guards)
Sarah: It keeps changing… What am I suposed to do?
Bottom Red Guard: Well the only way out of here is to try one of these doors.
Botton Blue Guard: One of them leads to the castle of the center of the labyrinth, and the other leads to…
Top Blue Guard: BAH BAH BAMMM…
Bottom Blue Guard: Certain death!
Guards: Ooooohhhhhhhh…
Sarah learns that she could be facing death
Sarah: But which one is which?
Bottom Red Guard: We can’t tell you.
Sarah: Why not?
Bottom Red Guard: Uh… We don’t know!
Bottom Blue Guard: But they do (looking at the top guards).
Sarah: Oh, then I’ll ask them.
Top Red Guard: Uh… No! You can’t ask us. You can only ask one of us.
Top Blue Guard: (Agrees) It’s in the rules. And I should warn you that one of us always tells the truth, and the other one always lies. That’s a rule too, he always lies.
Top Red Guard: I do not, I tell the truth!
Top Blue Guard: Ohhh what a lie!
Bottom Blue Guard: (Laughs)
Sarah asks her question to the Top Red Guard
Sarah: All right… Answer yes or no (asking the Top Red Guard). Would he tell me that this door leads to the castle?
Top Red Guard: Uh… (Thinks) (Consult the Bottom Red Guard) Yes!
Sarah: Then the other door leads to the castle, and this door leads to certain death.
Guards: Ooooohhhhhhhh…
Top Red Guard: How do you know? He could be telling the truth.
Sarah: But then you wouldn’t be, so if you told me that he said yes, I know the answer is no.
Top Red Guard: But I could be telling the truth!
Sarah: Then he would be lying, so if you told me that the answer is yes, I know the answer would still be no.
Top Red Guard: Uh… Wait a minute, (asking the Top Blue Guard) is that right?
Top Blue Guard: I don’t know! I’ve never understood it…

My girlfriend made me listen to a new podcast (to my knowledge) the other day, JapanesePod101, that helps you learn japanese with daily ~10 minutes long episodes. The host, Peter Galante, makes learning the language very easy with the help of what turned out to be a staff of native speakers. Of course, like every other podcast, this one is also free…
This podcast will be one year old in December, which means that they are over 150 lessons, from survival phrases to intermediate lessons. You can subscribe to this podcast on JapanesePod101.com and on iTunes (a link to the audio version).

Déception à l’horizzon?

Je viens tout juste de trouver un endroit sur Radio Nova où l’on parle du Headphones required / Mets tes écouteurs podcast. C’est dans le cadre de l’émission Home Radio diffusée hier, soit lundi dernier. Malheureusement, l’échantillon que le hasard a choisi de leur donner (où peut-être est-ce intentionnel?) est celui de l’émission hors série réalisée le 5 septembre dernier, soit l’Épisode 016.1.
Ce n’est pas une faute en soi, exceptée qu’on présente l’animateur comme un robot… et puisque c’est loin d’être une habitude (c’est quand même la seule fois), peut-être certains d’entre vous resteront surpris à m’entendre? Qu’à cela ne tienne, j’en ai vu d’autres… Vous pouvez télécharger l’émission en question ici (intitulée «2 podcasts fous du Québec» et mettant également en vedette le Podcast du cast de Jean-François Comeau).

Passe-Partout : le premier coffret attendu en novembre

Après plus de 15 ans d’absence (je calcule grosso-modo… Il me semble que j’avais 12 ans quand Radio-Québec a cessé de diffuser cette émission, non?), la série culte Passe-Partout sera bel et bien disponible en DVD! Distribuée par Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm, on peut s’attendre à ce que la qualité de l’émission soit restaurée à son état original.
MONTRÉAL, Québec – Les poussinots et les poussinettes seront heureux d’apprendre que le premier coffret de «Passe-Partout» sera enfin disponible sur support DVD, le 21 novembre prochain, via Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm. Ce coffret offrira les 25 premiers épisodes de cette série pour enfants qui a marqué toute une génération.
Conçue par le ministère de l’Éducation du Québec pour les enfants de 3 à 6 ans, cette émission a été mise en ondes pour la première fois le 14 novembre 1977.

Montreal’s musical scene, and everything else…

I have met Teena Apeles yesterday, a freelance writer for Helio, a «new phone-friendly, pop culture webzine». Her assignement was to do an overview of the exciting things coming out of /going on in Montreal. Fortunately, she already met people in the know (Mutek and Elektra’s managers) on the subject, which helped me to release the stress that answering her questions got me into.
Fortunately, our conversation did not take the form of an interview; it can better be described as two persons talking about foreigner’s perception of Montreal’s artists. Of course, we have lots of festivals (Pop Montreal and Osheaga being held last month), which probably helps contributing a positive image of our musical scene. However, I must admit that successful bands more often described as being from Montreal (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade and The Dears) don’t end up being shown as important here as they should be.
Anyway, even thought the conversation seemed pessimistic from time to time, I couldn’t really pretend that Montreal was living up to expectations. We concluded that Montreal, with all its festivals, seemed to be a good place for foreign bands to evolve, to progress and try new things…
