Un podcast, deux langues, une base de données, deux adresses, un layout, une fin de semaine. Prochaine étape? Inclure un article expliquant ce qu’est une baladodiffusion et un mode d’emploi pour les candidats néophytes…

J’ai entendu parler de Songbird il y a quelques mois, alors que le projet était encore en chantier et à la recherche de développeurs. J’ai récemment téléchargé la version bêta (enfin disponible pour Mac OS X) et je crois que je suis devenu accroc.

Recherche d’un groupe de musique sous Songbird

Tout d’abord, le logiciel se présente sous une forme familière, apparence empruntée à iTunes. Même si l’interface manque légèrement de la finesse d’un logiciel Apple, la flexibilité du produit, construit sur les mêmes fondations que Firefox, compense largement sa déficience esthétique.

Comme certains d’entre vous l’auront deviné, il est possible de visiter n’importe quel site généré grâce au noyau Firefox de Songbird. Si la page en question propose des liens menant à des fichiers audio ou vidéo, Songbird vous permettra de les écouter à même le lecteur et de traiter les fichiers comme n’importe quelle autre chanson de votre discothèque iTunes (que vous ayez choisi de télécharger le fichier ou simplement conserver le lien).

Là où Songbird surpasse mes attentes, c’est lorsqu’il m’a fait découvrir Singing Fish, un moteur de recherche dédié à l’audio et à la vidéo. Par exemple, si vous tapez «Psapp» dans la case appropriée, Songbird lancera une recherche via Singing Fish, et les résultats apparaîtront dans la Liste de lecture web, vous permettant de choisir d’écouter ou télécharger n’importe quelle piste individuellement. Franchement, c’est un pas en avant d’iTunes…

Ce logiciel est disponible pour Windows, Linux et Mac OS X. Étant donné que le projet est Open Source, plusieurs extensions sont déjà disponibles. C’est gratuit.

With what was announced at MWSF 2007 this week, it becomes more and more clear to me that iTunes will become the next big thing, the center of the digital hub in an era where sharing entertainment in the household is something that more people seeks everyday. Apple has begun another “cleaning phase” like the company once did in 1998. They slowly got rid of the Power name in their product (the return of the Mac brand on every computers, since those weren’t PowerPC anymore). They are carefully expanding their product line to different market, without offering more than 2 or 3 solutions per subject. They are getting rid of their computer-centric image by changing their name to Apple inc. I think that Apple will chose to kill the Finder in the foremost future, and replace it with iTunes.

Ever since it’s introduction, iTunes has been a huge success. Apple took notice and integrated key elements from iTunes into the Finder when releasing Mac OS X Jaguar: the sidebar and built in search in every window. I predict that Apple is going to merge iTunes and the Finder in one single interface. They will get rid of the iTunes name because this app is not dedicated to music anymore.

And when you think about it, every element listed in iTunes is a file, so why wouldn’t they use its simple navigation for everything else? Different categories for different media, different purposes. Easy setup of any peripherals that are plugged in. Fast autosync with portable devices, fast search using bundled Spotlight technology. It make sense.

Is this the idea for the next generation of operating system, or will Apple implement all of this in another Finder view for the next version of Mac OS X, Leopard? Only time will tell…
